In the Sangat I Set My Worries Down

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਚਿੰਤ ਬਿਰਾਨੀ ਛਾਡੀ ॥
saaDhsang chint biraanee chhaadee.
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, I have renounced my other cares and anxieties.
ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ ਮੋਹ ਮਨ ਬਾਸਨ ਦੇ ਕਰਿ ਗਡਹਾ ਗਾਡੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ahaN-buDh moh man baasan day kar gadhaa gaadee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I dug a deep pit, and buried my egotistical pride, emotional attachment and the desires of my mind. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

In the Sangat, I have let go of every other worry and fear.

The proud me-first feeling, the clinging, the endless wanting — I dug a deep place and laid them all to rest.

In the Sangat, it is safe to put your heaviest worries down.
The deeper layer

In the Sangat, I could finally put my worries down.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. SaaDhsang chint biraanee chhaadee — in the Sangat, I let go of other worries. SaaDhsang is the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. It is the place where chint biraanee, borrowed worries, can finally be set down, like dropping a heavy backpack at the door.

The next line speaks of aha-buDh, the proud, me-first mind. This is haumai, the feeling of being a separate, defensive self. It is not fought. It is buried, laid gently to rest, so new life can grow, the way a seed is tucked into the soil.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people around whom your worries feel lighter?
