A Friend to Everyone I Meet

ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਮੀਤੁ ਹਮ ਆਪਨ ਕੀਨਾ ਹਮ ਸਭਨਾ ਕੇ ਸਾਜਨ ॥

I am a friend to all; I am everyone's friend.

door paraa-i-o man kaa birhaa taa mayl kee-o mayrai raajan. ||3||
When the sense of separation was removed from my mind, then I was united with the Lord, my King. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have made every single person my friend, and I belong to them all.

Once the feeling of being cut off melted away, I found myself joined again with my King.

The end of feeling separate is the beginning of feeling at home everywhere.
The deeper layer

Having no enemies grows into having everyone as a friend.

This follows naturally from the line before. Sabh ko meet ham aapan keenaa — I have made everyone my friend.

Birhaa is the ache of being apart. That ache was never really about the One being far away. It was the feeling of being cut off. It is like feeling lonely when you are upset, while your family is right there in the next room. When that feeling melts, you are together again, right away.

A Question to Sit With

What makes you feel connected to someone rather than separate from them?
