Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You are my kind Protector, the One who keeps me safe.

Beautiful, wise, endless Father, my God, please be kind to me.

You are allowed to ask, plainly, to be held gently.
The deeper layer

A small child prays to a loving parent: please keep me close, and please be kind.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. It calls the One raakhanhaar da-i-aal, the kind Protector. Then it adds one warm name after another. Sundar means beautiful. Sughar means wise. Bay-ant means without end. Pitaa means father.

After all those names, the request is very simple: hohu parabhoo kirpaal — be kind to me, God. It does not ask for toys or prizes. It asks to be near, and to be treated gently, the way a child reaches up to be held.

A Question to Sit With

Who in your life is easy to ask for help — and what makes them feel safe to ask?
