Charms Are Ashes; the One in the Heart Is Medicine

ਅਉਖਧ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਤੰਤ ਸਭਿ ਛਾਰੁ ॥
a-ukhaDh mantar tant sabh chhaar.
All medicines and remedies, mantras and tantras are nothing more than ashes.
ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰੁ ਰਿਦੇ ਮਹਿ ਧਾਰੁ ॥੩॥
karnaihaar riday meh Dhaar. ||3||
Enshrine the Creator Lord within your heart. ||3||

In plain words

Charms and cure-alls and clever tricks are like ashes next to this: simply keep the Maker of everything alive within your heart. That is the real medicine.

Charms and tricks are ashes; the real medicine is keeping the One alive in your heart.
The deeper layer

Charms and tricks are like ashes. The real medicine is keeping the One in your heart.

A-ukhaDh mantar tant sabh chhaar — remedies, magic words and spells are all ashes. A mantar here is a spoken charm. A tant is a spell or trick meant to make something happen.

This line names no people and no faith. It points at a habit found everywhere: trusting a formula to force the result we want. Think of a lucky pencil kept for a test. It cannot do the studying for you.

The real cure is karnaihaar riday meh Dhaar — hold the Creator in your heart. Trust the living One more than any technique.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever hoped a "trick" would fix something that really needed something deeper?
