Verse 4 of 5

Healing Comes Through a Habit Returned to Daily

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਨਿਤ ਨੀਤ ॥
nirmal gun gaavhu nit neet.
Sing the Glories of God each and every day;
ਗਈ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਨ ਮੀਤ ॥੩॥
ga-ee bi-aaDh ubray jan meet. ||3||
your afflictions shall be dispelled, and you shall be saved, my humble friend. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Let me sing the spotless goodness of the One every single day, as a steady habit of the heart.

As I do, the things that ailed me lift, and I find myself carried through, my dear friend.

The shabad's comfort comes not in one dramatic moment but through a gentle habit returned to day after day.
The deeper layer

Nirmal gun gaavhu nit neet — "sing the pure virtues, day after day, always." The emphasis is on nit neet, steady dailiness — not a single dramatic effort but a gentle habit. Ga-ee bi-aadh ubray jan meet — "the ailment departs, you are lifted up, O friend." Again the warm address, meet, friend. The verse's own language is direct; the healing it speaks of is read here as cumulative and quiet, the fruit of returning to the practice again and again, the way small daily waterings grow a plant.

A Question to Sit With

What good habit, done a little each day, has slowly changed you more than any big effort could?
