ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
ga-orhee mehlaa 5.
Gauree, Fifth Mehl:
ਤੂੰਹੈ ਮਸਲਤਿ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
tooNhai maslat tooNhai naal.
You are my Advisor; You are always with me.
ਤੂਹੈ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਸਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥੧॥
toohai raakhahi saar samaal. ||1||
You preserve, protect and care for me. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
When I need advice, You are the wise voice I turn to, and You are right here beside me the whole time. You keep watch over me, take care of me, and never leave me alone.
The One I turn to for advice is the same One who never leaves my side.
This short Gauree of Guru Arjan (Mehl 5) opens on intimacy, not distance. Masalat means counsel or advice, and naal means "with." The One is not a far-off ruler but the trusted advisor who is also the constant companion — the same presence that raakhahi (protects) and saar samaal (cares for, tends). It sets the whole shabad in the key of being safely held.
A Question to Sit With
Who do you go to when you need advice, and what does it feel like to have them near?
