The Whole Day Is Time to Keep the One in Mind

ਆਗੈ ਆਪਿ ਇਹੁ ਥਾਨੁ ਵਸਿ ਜਾ ਕੈ ॥
aagai aap ih thaan vas jaa kai.
He alone exists hereafter; this place is in His Power.
ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਉ ਜਾਪੈ ॥੨॥
aath pahar man har ka-o jaapai. ||2||
Twenty-four hours a day, O my mind, chant and meditate on the Lord. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One alone is what stands ahead of us, and this very place we live in rests inside that greater keeping. So all through the day and night, let my mind stay turned toward the One, remembering with quiet love.

The whole day is time enough to keep the One quietly in mind.
The deeper layer

Aagai aap — "ahead, the One alone" — points to what is real beyond this passing moment. Ih thaan vas jaa kai means "this place is in whose power": everything here rests inside a larger keeping. Aath pahar is the old way of saying "all twenty-four hours," the eight watches of the day. The instruction to jaapai (remember, hold in mind) is framed positively — not as duty but as the natural resting-place of a mind that has found where it belongs.

A Question to Sit With

What is a small thing you could remember throughout your day that would make you feel steadier?
