Win Over Your Own Mind, the Only Battle That Matters

ਲਾਥੀ ਭੂਖ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਸਭ ਲਾਥੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਸਾਰੀ ॥
laathee bhookh tarisan sabh laathee chintaa sagal bisaaree.
My hunger has departed, my thirst has totally departed, and all my anxiety is forgotten.
ਕਰੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਧਰਿਓ ਮਨੁ ਜੀਤੋ ਜਗੁ ਸਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
kar mastak gur poorai Dhari-o man jeeto jag saaree. ||1||
The Perfect Guru has placed His Hand upon my forehead; conquering my mind, I have conquered the whole world. ||1||

In plain words

My hunger is gone, my thirst is completely gone, and all my worry is forgotten. The whole teaching laid its gentle hand on me — and by winning over my own mind, I have won the whole world.

Win over your own restless mind, and you've won the only battle that matters.
The deeper layer

When you win over your own mind, you have won the only battle that matters.

Laathee bhookh tarisan sabh laathee — hunger is gone, all thirst is gone. This thirst is trisnaa, the endless craving behind so much unhappiness. It has gone quiet. With it, chintaa, worry, is forgotten too.

Then comes a famous Gurbani line: man jeeto jag saaree — by winning over my mind, I have won the whole world. The real battle is never with the world outside. It is with the restless mind inside. Think of a player who stops arguing with the referee and calms down. Suddenly the whole game goes better.

And the win does not come by force. It comes through a hand placed gently on the forehead: kar mastak gur poorai dhari-o, the Perfect Guru placed a hand on my forehead. That is grace.
