Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 82
Verse 3 of 5

When You Truly Trust, Following Feels Like Freedom

ਜਿਉ ਤੁਮ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਤਿਵ ਹੀ ਰਹਨਾ ॥
ji-o tum raakho tiv hee rahnaa.
As You keep me, so do I survive.
ਜੋ ਤੁਮ ਕਹਹੁ ਸੋਈ ਮੋਹਿ ਕਰਨਾ ॥
jo tum kahhu so-ee mohi karnaa.
Whatever You say, that is what I do.
ਜਹ ਪੇਖਉ ਤਹਾ ਤੁਮ ਬਸਨਾ ॥
jah paykha-o tahaa tum basnaa.
Wherever I look, there I see You dwelling.
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਰਸਨਾ ॥੨॥
nirbha-o naam japa-o tayraa rasnaa. ||2||
O my Fearless Lord, with my tongue, I chant Your Name. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

However You keep me, that's how I live; whatever You show me to do, that's what I do — gladly, trusting the flow.

Wherever I look, there You are, already present. And so, unafraid, my tongue keeps Your Name close.

When you truly trust someone, following their lead feels like freedom, not force.
The deeper layer

Ji-o tum raakho tiv hee rahnaa — however You keep me, so I live; jo tum kahhu so-ee mohi karnaa — whatever You say, I do. This is trustful alignment with Hukam, born of the love in the prior verses — surrender as an expression of closeness, not submission to a stranger. Jah paykha-u tahaa tum basnaa — everywhere I look, You dwell (Ik Onkar). Nirbha-u naam japa-u — I keep the fearless Name.

A Question to Sit With

Is there someone you trust so much that doing things their way feels easy, not hard?
