Verse 4 of 5

The Company Where Goodness Feels Sweet Is Precious

satsangat gur kee har pi-aaree jin har har naam meethaa man bhaa-i-aa.
The Sat Sangat, the True Congregation of the Guru, is loved by the Lord. The Naam, the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, is sweet and pleasing to their minds.
jin satgur sangat sang na paa-i-aa say bhaagheen paapee jam khaa-i-aa. ||3||
One who does not obtain the Association of the True Guru, is a most unfortunate sinner; he is consumed by the Messenger of Death. ||3||

In plain words

The true company of the teaching is dear to the One; the Name is sweet and pleasing to their minds.

The one who never finds that company is truly unlucky, worn away by their own restless drivenness.

The company where goodness feels sweet is precious even to its source — seek it, and be worn down less.
The deeper layer

The verse states the value of the Sat Sangat from the One's own side: it is "loved by the Lord." The company where the Name is sweet is precious to the source itself. The dark half — the one "consumed by the Messenger of Death" — is again softened to a life "worn away by restless drivenness," a life that never found the sweetness because it never found the company. The remedy is not fear but fellowship, which the whole shabad keeps pressing.

A Question to Sit With

What company makes goodness feel *sweet* to you rather than like effort?
