The Best Wealth Is Carried in Every Posture of the Day

ਮਾਈ ਖਾਟਿ ਆਇਓ ਘਰਿ ਪੂਤਾ ॥
maa-ee khaat aa-i-o ghar pootaa.
O mother, your son has returned home with a profit:

har Dhan chaltay har Dhan baisay har Dhan jaagat sootaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
the wealth of the Lord while walking, the wealth of the Lord while sitting, and the wealth of the Lord while waking and sleeping. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Mother, your child has come home, and come home with a profit!

I have the One's wealth when I walk and when I sit. I have it when I'm awake and when I sleep.

The best kind of wealth is the sort you carry in every posture of the day — walking, sitting, waking, sleeping.
The deeper layer

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. It pictures a homecoming. maa-ee khaat aa-i-o ghar pootaa — "Mother, your son has come home with a profit."

A mother at the door is the oldest picture of a warm welcome. Think of running home to tell your mom you won the prize. The joy here is like that: a life that gained what lasts.

And this wealth is always there. har Dhan chaltay — while walking. har Dhan baisay — while sitting. It is there waking and sleeping too. It is not locked away in a box. It goes with you through every part of the day. Another shabad in this raag says the same: love can fill a whole life. Here it is sung as pure gladness.

A Question to Sit With

What good do you carry with you all day, in every posture, without having to hold it in your hands?
