The Boat Across Is the Very Thing You Treasure Most

ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਲਾਇ ਧਿਆਨਾ ॥
har Dhan isnaan har Dhan gi-aan har sang laa-ay Dhi-aanaa.
The wealth of the Lord is my cleansing bath, the wealth of the Lord is my wisdom; I center my meditation on the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਤੁਲਹਾ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਬੇੜੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਤਾਰਿ ਪਰਾਨਾ ॥੨॥
har Dhan tulhaa har Dhan bayrhee har har taar paraanaa. ||2||
The wealth of the Lord is my raft, the wealth of the Lord is my boat; the Lord, Har, Har, is the ship to carry me across. ||2||

In plain words

The One's wealth is my cleansing bath, the One's wealth is my wisdom; I rest my mind on the One.

The One's wealth is my raft, my boat, my ship to carry me across.

The boat across every hard crossing turns out to be the very thing you already treasure most.
The deeper layer

The boat that carries you across is the thing you already love.

The song keeps turning every tool into this one wealth. har Dhan isnaan — it is my holy bath. har Dhan gi-aan — it is my wisdom. And then, beautifully, it is the boat. har Dhan tulhaa har Dhan bayrhee — it is my raft, it is my boat.

This raag often speaks of life as a scary ocean to cross. Here the boat is not a skill you must learn. It is the same joyful wealth: the remembered One. Think of a sleepy little kid carried home in a parent's arms. You do not build this boat by hard work. You are carried by what you already treasure.

A Question to Sit With

When you've made it through something hard, what carried you? Was it something you already loved?
