Spiritual Sleep Is Just Forgetting

Spiritual wisdom and meditation are all said to be God's gifts; all of the demons are turned white before him.

He enjoys the taste of the honey of God's lotus; he remains awake, and does not fall asleep. ||7||

In plain words

Wisdom and deep stillness are called gifts of the One; before such a person the demons turn pale.

They taste the honey of the One's lotus, and stay awake — they do not fall asleep.

Spiritual sleep is just forgetting — and the one who has tasted the honey has every reason to stay awake.
The deeper layer

The verse names wisdom and meditation as gifts (not achievements), and pictures "the demons" — the inner adversaries — "turned white," drained of power, before one so given. The reward is sensory and sweet: "the honey of God's lotus." And the recurring watchword: "he remains awake, and does not fall asleep." Spiritual sleep is forgetting; wakefulness is the tasted sweetness that keeps a person present. The one who tastes the honey has a reason to stay awake.

A Question to Sit With

What sweetness, once tasted, makes you not want to 'fall asleep' and forget it?
