Verse 3 of 9

The Measure of a Moment Is Its Remembrance

har gun rasan raveh parabh sangay jo tis bhaavai sahj haree.
He chants the Glorious Praises of the Lord with his tongue, and abides with God; he does whatever pleases the Lord.
Without the Lord's Name, life passes in vain in the world, and every moment is useless. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

They praise the One with the tongue and live close to it, doing whatever pleases the One.

Without the Name, a life runs empty in the world, and every passing moment is wasted.

The measure of a moment isn't its productivity — it's whether it holds any remembrance at all.
The deeper layer

The verse pairs the fruitful life with its opposite. The fruitful: praise on the tongue, nearness to the One, and action aligned with what pleases it. The empty: "without the Lord's Name, life passes in vain... every moment is useless." The measure of a moment is not its productivity or pleasure but whether it holds any remembrance. A moment full of the One is never wasted; a busy moment empty of it is. This is the raag's economy of time.

A Question to Sit With

Which of your 'busy' moments are actually full, and which are empty? What makes the difference?
