Verse 6 of 10

The Cosmos Dances by Nature; You Dance by Consent

jo tuDh bhaaveh say-ee naacheh jin gurmukh sabad liv laa-ay.
They alone dance, who are pleasing to You, and who, as Gurmukhs, embrace love for the Word of the Shabad.
ਸੇ ਭਗਤ ਸੇ ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮਨਾਏ ॥੬॥
say bhagat say tat gi-aanee jin ka-o hukam manaa-ay. ||6||
They are devotees, with the essence of spiritual wisdom, who obey the Hukam of His Command. ||6||

In plain words

But only those truly dance who please You, and who — facing the teaching — take up love for the Word.

They are the real devotees, filled with wisdom's essence, who live by the One's Command.

The cosmos dances by nature, but the devotee dances by love and consent — the difference is willing alignment.
The deeper layer

Everything moves, but the devotee chooses to move with love.

After the huge picture of everything dancing, the verse points again to the real dance. Jo tuDh bhaaveh say-ee naacheh — only those truly dance who please You. They love the sabad, the Word. And they live by the hukam, the One's Command, the way things are meant to go.

All creation moves. But the dance that counts is the loving, willing kind. The stars dance because it is their nature. The devotee dances out of love, by saying yes. Think of a whole orchestra. Every instrument makes sound, but the music comes when each player gladly follows the conductor. The difference is not motion. It is choosing to move in tune.

A Question to Sit With

What would it mean to move through life not just carried along, but in willing, loving alignment?
