Verse 9 of 10

Aim at Remembrance; Be Forgiven Gently Every Slip

ਇਕੁ ਦਮੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਸਾ ਵੇਲਾ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
ik dam saachaa veesrai saa vaylaa birthaa jaa-ay.
If I forget the True Lord, even for an instant, that time passes in vain.
ਸਾਹਿ ਸਾਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਸਮਾਲੀਐ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਕਰੇ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੯॥
saahi saahi sadaa samaalee-ai aapay bakhsay karay rajaa-ay. ||9||
With each and every breath, constantly remember the Lord; He Himself shall forgive you, according to His Will. ||9||

In plain words

If I forget the True One even for a moment, that moment is wasted.

With every breath, keep remembering the One; by its own Will, it forgives you.

You aim at constant remembrance — and you're forgiven gently every time you slip, so the high standard never crushes.
The deeper layer

Aim to remember the One always, and know you are forgiven when you slip.

Ik dam saachaa veesrai — if I forget the True One for even one breath, saa vaylaa birthaa jaa-ay — that time goes to waste. That is a high goal. But the tone is gentle, not worried.

The fix is simple. Saahi saahi sadaa samaalee-ai — with every breath, keep remembering. And comfort comes right away. Aapay bakhsay — the One forgives you. The high goal is cushioned by grace. It is like learning to ride a bike with a parent running beside you. You aim to stay up. When you wobble, they catch you. You aim at remembering always, and you are held gently each time you slip.

A Question to Sit With

Can you hold a high aim lightly, forgiving yourself each time you forget, rather than giving up?
