Before a Greatness Beyond Category, Be Struck Speechless

ਪਿਤਾ ਮੇਰੋ ਬਡੋ ਧਨੀ ਅਗਮਾ ॥

My Father is wealthy, deep and profound.

What praises should I chant, O Creator Lord? Beholding You, I am wonder-struck. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My Father is rich, deep, and beyond all fathoming.

What praise could I possibly sing, Creator? Looking at You, I am struck speechless with wonder.

Faced with a greatness that tops every category, the only honest response is to be struck speechless with wonder.
The deeper layer

The Pause line is the emotional heart of the litany: faced with a greatness that tops every category, the only honest response is wonder — "beholding You, I am wonder-struck." This is Vismaad, the raag's awe. Notice the litany does not lead to a demand or a bargain but to speechlessness — "what praises should I chant?" The list of superlatives isn't meant to be completed; it's meant to overwhelm the counter into silent astonishment. And the One is called "Father" — the vastness is also intimate, family.

A Question to Sit With

When has something been so vast or beautiful that words felt useless and you just went quiet?
