A Self No Longer Puffed Up Slips Free

mehlaa 3.
Third Mehl:
naanak mukat du-aaraa at neekaa naanHaa ho-ay so jaa-ay.
O Nanak, the gate of liberation is very narrow; only the very tiny can pass through.
ha-umai man asthool hai ki-o kar vich day jaa-ay.
Through egotism, the mind has become bloated. How can it pass through?
satgur mili-ai ha-umai ga-ee jot rahee sabh aa-ay.
Meeting the True Guru, egotism departs, and one is filled with the Divine Light.
ih jee-o sadaa mukat hai sehjay rahi-aa samaa-ay. ||2||
Then, this soul is liberated forever, and it remains absorbed in celestial bliss. ||2||

In plain words

Nanak says the same: the gate to freedom is very narrow; only the very small pass through.

Through ego the mind is bloated — how could it pass? But meet the true teaching, ego goes, and light fills you; then the soul is free for good, resting in deep peace.

Smallness isn't weakness — a self no longer puffed up is finally small enough to slip free.
The deeper layer

The Third Mehl echoes Kabir's image, confirming the teaching across voices: "only the very tiny can pass through," and the mind "bloated" by ego cannot. Meeting the teaching, "egotism departs, and one is filled with the Divine Light" — the swelling replaced by radiance. Smallness here is not weakness; it is the freedom of a self no longer puffed up enough to be stuck.

A Question to Sit With

Where would getting 'smaller' — less puffed up — actually set you free?
