O Nanak, the soul-brides dwell in peace; they have the Lord, their King, as their Husband. ||2||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The bride who never loves her Beloved burns and frets away the whole night of her life.
Nanak says: the soul-brides who have the One as their own live in peace.
This life is a 'night' — spent without love it frets away restless; spent with it, in peace.
A short Shalok using the soul-bride image: the one who never turns to love "burns and wastes away all through the night of her life" — restless, unfulfilled. But those united with the Beloved "dwell in peace." The "night" is this life; how you spend it depends on whether love is present. Loveless, it is a long restless dark; with the Beloved, it is peace.
A Question to Sit With
Are you spending the 'night' of your days restless for something, or at peace with what you love?
