Reaching for What Feeds the Soul Is the Highest Yield

Shalok, Third Mehl:
je satgur sayvay aapnaa tis no poojay sabh ko-ay.
One who serves his True Guru, is worshipped by everyone.
sabhnaa upaavaa sir upaa-o hai har naam paraapat ho-ay.
Of all efforts, the supreme effort is the attainment of the Lord's Name.
antar seetal saat vasai jap hirdai sadaa sukh ho-ay.
Peace and tranquility come to dwell within the mind; meditating within the heart, there comes a lasting peace.
amrit khaanaa amrit painnaa naanak naam vadaa-ee ho-ay. ||1||
The Ambrosial Amrit is his food, and the Ambrosial Amrit is his clothes; O Nanak, through the Naam, the Name of the Lord, greatness is obtained. ||1||

In plain words

The one who serves the true teaching is honored by all.

Of every effort, the highest is reaching the One's name. Peace settles in the mind; meditating in the heart, a lasting calm comes. The nectar is their food, the nectar their clothing; through the Name, greatness is found.

Of everything you could strive for, reaching for what actually feeds and clothes the soul is the highest yield.
The deeper layer

The Shalok crowns one effort above all: "the supreme effort is the attainment of the Lord's Name." Among all the things a person could strive for, this is the highest yield. And the imagery is intimate provision — the nectar as "food" and "clothes," the two basics of life relocated to the sacred (as in Shabad 19). A life fed and clothed by the Name lacks nothing essential.

A Question to Sit With

If you ranked your efforts by what they truly yield, what would rise to the top?
