Sikhism·Raag Goojaree·Shabad 57
Verse 37 of 66

The Ego Burned Away Leaves Not Loss but Radiance

salok mehlaa 3.
Shalok, Third Mehl:
ha-umai mamtaa mohnee manmukhaa no ga-ee khaa-ay.
By egotism and pride, the self-willed manmukhs are enticed, and consumed.
jo mohi doojai chit laa-iday tinaa vi-aap rahee laptaa-ay.
Those who center their consciousness on duality are caught in it, and remain stuck.
gur kai sabad parjaalee-ai taa ayh vichahu jaa-ay.
But when it is burnt away by the Word of the Guru's Shabad, only then does it depart from within.
tan man hovai ujlaa naam vasai man aa-ay.
The body and mind become radiant and bright, and the Naam, the Name of the Lord, comes to dwell within the mind.
naanak maa-i-aa kaa maaran har naam hai gurmukh paa-i-aa jaa-ay. ||1||
O Nanak, the Lord's Name is the antidote to Maya; the Gurmukh obtains it. ||1||

In plain words

Ego and pride entice the self-centered and eat them up.

Fix on a second and you get stuck fast. Only when it's burned by the Word does it leave; then body and mind go radiant, and the Name moves in. Nanak says: the Name is the antidote to the glitter; the Gurmukh receives it.

The ego isn't reasoned away — it's burned away by something truer, and what's left isn't loss but a lit-up radiance.
The deeper layer

The Shalok names the Name as "the antidote to Maya" — Maya is a poison, and there is a cure. Ego cannot be reasoned away; it "is burnt away by the Word of the Guru's Shabad" — consumed, not negotiated with. And once it goes, "body and mind become radiant": the removal of the ego is not a loss but a lighting-up. The antidote heals the whole person.

A Question to Sit With

What in you might need to be 'burned away' rather than argued with? What would be left glowing?
