Real Praise Is the Spontaneous Wow

salok mehlaa 3.
Shalok, Third Mehl:
vaahu vaahu aap akhaa-idaa gur sabdee sach so-ay.
Waaho! Waaho! The Lord Himself causes us to praise Him, through the True Word of the Guru's Shabad.
vaahu vaahu sifat salaah hai gurmukh boojhai ko-ay.
Waaho! Waaho! is His Eulogy and Praise; how rare are the Gurmukhs who understand this.
vaahu vaahu banee sach hai sach milaavaa ho-ay.
Waaho! Waaho! is the True Word of His Bani, by which we meet our True Lord.
naanak vaahu vaahu karti-aa parabh paa-i-aa karam paraapat ho-ay. ||1||
O Nanak, chanting Waaho! Waaho! God is attained; by His Grace, He is obtained. ||1||

In plain words

Wonder! Wonder! — the One itself moves us to praise it, through the true Word.

'Wonder, wonder!' is its praise; how rare are those who get it. That cry of wonder is the true Word by which we meet the One. Nanak says: crying 'Wonder!' the One is reached, by its grace.

Real praise isn't manufactured — it's the spontaneous 'Wow!' the wonderful draws out of you.
The deeper layer

Here begins the Vaar's great Waaho! Waaho! litany — an exclamation best rendered as "Wonder!" or "Wow!", the spontaneous cry of a heart astonished by the One. This is Vismaad, the raag's awe, made vocal. And note: even this cry "the Lord Himself causes us" to make — wonder is not manufactured but evoked; the One draws the astonishment out of us. Praise begins as something that happens to you.

A Question to Sit With

When did something last draw an involuntary 'wow' out of you? What was it?
