Third Mehl:

sachaa naam Dhi-aa-ee-ai sabho vartai sach.
Meditate on the True Name; the True Lord is pervading everywhere.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਬੁਝਿ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਹੋਇ ਤਾ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਚੁ ॥
naanak hukam bujh parvaan ho-ay taa fal paavai sach.
O Nanak, by understanding the Hukam of the Lord's Command, one becomes acceptable, and then obtains the fruit of Truth.
kathnee badnee kartaa firai hukmai mool na bujh-ee anDhaa kach nikach. ||2||
He wanders around babbling and speaking, but he does not understand the Lord's Command at all. He is blind, the falsest of the false. ||2||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Hold the True Name in mind; the True One fills every place.
Understand the One's ordering Will, and you become welcome, and taste the fruit of truth. Babble and wander without grasping the Will, and you stay in the dark.
Alignment with a wiser Will, not clever talk, is what makes a life ring true.
The paired Shalok centers hukam — the ordering Will. Acceptance ("becoming acceptable") comes from understanding and aligning with the Will, not from clever talk. The one who "wanders around babbling" but never grasps the Will is "blind" — full of words, empty of the one understanding that matters. Alignment, not eloquence, is the doorway.
A Question to Sit With
Is there a place you're 'babbling' — full of words — where quiet alignment would serve you better?
