O Nanak, he is known as a Gurmukh, whom the Lord Himself enlightens. ||2||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Whatever is truly pleasing is sweet, and the sincere one is a real friend.
Nanak says: the Gurmukh is the one the One itself enlightens.
Against all deceit, the simple virtue of a sincere heart — one that matches its words — is friendship itself.
A two-line Shalok prizing sincerity: "one who is sincere is a friend." Against all the deceit and hypocrisy the Vaar has diagnosed, the simple virtue of a heart that matches its words is named as friendship itself. And the Gurmukh — the enlightened one — is finally not self-made but "whom the Lord Himself enlightens." Sincerity and grace: the two quiet notes the Vaar keeps returning to.
A Question to Sit With
Where could you be more sincere — letting your inside and outside match a little more?
