Verse 40 of 63

Neither the Turning nor the Love Is a Solo Achievement

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੫ ॥
salok mehlaa 5.
Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਭਏ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਈ ਜਪਾਤ ॥
jaa ka-o bha-ay kirpaal parabh har har say-ee japaat.
They alone meditate on the Lord God, Har, Har, unto whom the Lord is Merciful.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗੀ ਤਿਨ ਰਾਮ ਸਿਉ ਭੇਟਤ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਾਤ ॥੧॥
naanak pareet lagee tin raam si-o bhaytat saaDh sangaat. ||1||
O Nanak, they enshrine love for the Lord, meeting the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Only those the One is merciful to truly remember it.

Nanak says: they take up love for the One, meeting the company of the good.

The turning is graced and the love is kindled in good company — neither is a solo achievement.
The deeper layer

A short Shalok crediting even remembrance to mercy — "they alone meditate... unto whom the Lord is Merciful" — and locating the love in good company: "meeting the Saadh Sangat." Two of the Vaar's steady convictions in two lines: the turning is graced, and the love is kindled among the good. Neither is a solo achievement; both come as gift and as company.

A Question to Sit With

What good in you came not from solo effort but from grace and the right company?
