The Ruts You Dig Become the Pits You Fall Into

Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
ਚੰਗਿਆਈ ਆਲਕੁ ਕਰੇ ਬੁਰਿਆਈ ਹੋਇ ਸੇਰੁ ॥
chaNgi-aa-eeN aalak karay buri-aa-eeN ho-ay sayr.
He is reluctant to do good, but eager to practice evil.
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਜੁ ਕਲਿ ਆਵਸੀ ਗਾਫਲ ਫਾਹੀ ਪੇਰੁ ॥੧॥
naanak aj kal aavsee gaafal faahee payr. ||1||
O Nanak, today or tomorrow, the feet of the careless fool shall fall into the trap. ||1||

In plain words

Slow to do good, quick to do wrong —

Nanak says: sooner or later, the careless one's own feet fall into the trap.

The ruts you dig become the pits you fall into — small habits of avoidance and harm quietly set their own trap.
The deeper layer

A blunt little Shalok on how habits catch up with us. The "careless fool," "reluctant to do good" but "eager to practice evil," eventually "falls into the trap" — not by an outside punishment but by his own feet, his own repeated choices. Read as a caution, not a curse: the ruts we dig become the pits we fall into. Small habits of avoidance and harm quietly set a trap for the one who keeps them.

A Question to Sit With

What small habit are you 'quick' to do that might be digging a rut you'd rather not fall into?
