Some people perform the six rituals and all kinds of rites, making a big show of it. Seekers with special powers, and yogis, twist their hair into long, tangled locks.
Union with the One does not come from wearing holy robes. The One is found in the Sangat and in the teaching of the Guru, the True Guru. The humble holy people throw the doors wide open.
Outward shows cannot bring you to the One; the Sangat and the Guru's teaching open the door.
The verse lists what people try. Khat karam are the six set rituals. Bhaykh is special religious clothing. Some yogis and holy seekers grow long, matted hair. The verse mocks no practice and no faith. It points past the outward show to what brings union.
Think of wearing a team jersey. It does not make you a good player. Practice with your team does. Union with the One comes through satsangatee, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — and through the Guru's teaching. Khol khol kapaat: there, the humble ones throw the doors wide open for you.
When has something looked impressive on the outside but felt empty on the inside?
