Sikhism·Raag Kaanraa·Shabad 18
Verse 3 of 5

Beyond All, And Yet Here

ਸਭ ਤੇ ਪਰੈ ਪਰੈ ਤੇ ਊਚਾ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਅਥਾਹਿਓ ॥੨॥
sabh tay parai parai tay oochaa gahir gambheer athaahi-o. ||2||
You are the farthest of all, the highest of the far, profound, unfathomable and unreachable. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You are farther than the farthest, higher than the highest. You are deep and vast, too deep to measure, beyond all reach.

The One is beyond all our measuring, and still closer than we know.
The deeper layer

The One is beyond all reach, deeper than anything can measure.

Sabh tay parai: beyond all. Oochaa gahir gambheer athaahi-o: high, deep, profound, unfathomable. The One is beyond all reach and grasp, and in the next line the same One is near to those who love. Vastness and nearness sit together, like the whole sky that still touches your face as a breeze.

A Question to Sit With

What is something so big it fills you with wonder rather than fear?
