Kaanraa, Fifth Mehl:
ਸੰਤਨ ਪਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਉਧਾਰਨ ਆਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
santan peh aap uDhaaran aa-i-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I have come to the Saints to save myself. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have come to the holy people so that I can be saved.

It takes courage and honesty to come with open hands and ask for help.
The deeper layer

Coming to holy people and asking to be lifted up is good and honest.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad, like the chorus of a song. Here the whole rahaa-o is just one line.

Santan peh aap uDhaaran aa-i-o: "I have come to the saints to be saved." Santan means holy people. The word uDhaaran means to lift up or rescue.

This is a posture of empty hands, and an honest one: I cannot do it all by myself.

Think of asking a coach for help with a tricky move. It takes courage to say, "I need help." That is how everyone gets better. The heart that is ready to receive is the heart that can be helped.

A Question to Sit With

When has asking for help changed things for the better?
