Lifted, And Not Caught

ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਤਰੇ ਕੁਲ ਲੋਗਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਪਤ ਨ ਮਾਇਓ ॥੪॥੭॥
sant parsaad taray kul logaa naanak lipat na maa-i-o. ||4||7||
By the Grace of the Saints, the people and all their generations are saved; O Nanak, they are not engrossed in Maya. ||4||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Nanak says: By the grace of the holy people, people are carried across, with all their families. They are not stuck in Maya, the sticky pull of the passing world.

Goodness lifts one person and everyone around them.
The deeper layer

Goodness spreads. When one person is lifted, their whole family is lifted too.

The verse says sant parsaad taray kul logaa: "by the grace of the Saints, people and their whole families are carried across." Parsaad means a kind gift. Kul means family, across all the generations.

Then: naanak lipat na maa-i-o, "O Nanak, they are not stuck to Maya." Here maa-i-o means Maya, the shiny pull of passing things. Lipat means stuck, like tape on your finger.

Think of one kid in a family who learns to be kind. Soon the others copy it, and the whole house feels warmer. Freedom here means no longer being glued to things that do not last. Guru Arjan signs the shabad as Nanak.

A Question to Sit With

How does one person's kindness ripple out to others?
