I am thoughtless and unconscious; I do not know God's state and extent. The Guru has made me thoughtful and conscious.

God is Merciful to the meek; He has made me His Own. My mind chants and meditates on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||1||

In plain words

I was careless and half-asleep; I did not know how vast the One is. The Guru made me thoughtful and awake.

The One is kind to the humble and has made me Its very own. Now my mind chants the Naam of the One, Har, Har.

The Guru can wake you from moving through life half-asleep.
The deeper layer

The Guru wakes a careless, sleepy mind, and the One, kind to the humble, takes it in.

Ham achit achayt means "I am thoughtless and unaware." Gur kee-ay suchit chitayn means "the Guru made me thoughtful and awake." It is like someone opening the curtains on a sleepy morning, so the light comes in.

Deen da-i-aal means "kind to the humble." Angeekarit means "taken in as one's own." The waking is a gift, received with open hands, and it leads straight into remembering the Naam.

A Question to Sit With

When did someone help you notice something you had been walking right past?
