When I was dreaming, I heard and saw only dream-objects. The True Guru has implanted the Mantra of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, within me. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

In the shelter of the holy, I fix my mind on the feet of the One.

While I was dreaming, everything I heard and saw was only a dream. The True Guru has planted the mantra of the Naam firmly in me.

So much of what we chase is dream-stuff; the Naam is what stays.
The deeper layer

So much of what you chase is like a dream, and the Naam the Guru plants in you stays.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. It sets the fading dream of chasing beside the Naam that stays.

SaaDh saran charan chit laa-i-aa: in the shelter of the holy, I set my mind on the One's feet. That means staying close and humble, like a child sitting at a grandparent's feet to listen.

Supan kee baat sunee paykhee supnaa: everything I heard and saw was only dream-stuff. You know how a dream feels so vivid, and then you wake up and it is gone? Much of what we run after is like that. Naam mantar satguroo drirh-aa-i-aa: the True Guru planted the Naam firmly in me. The Naam is the lasting thing.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you once wanted badly that now seems small?
