Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O holy people, sing the praises of the One, Har, Haray.

Mind, body, wealth, and the breath of life all come from the One. Remembering the One, pain goes away.

Everything you have is already a gift; remembering that eases the ache.
The deeper layer

Everything you have comes from the One, and remembering the One eases your pain.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad, like the chorus of a song.

It begins saaDhoo har haray gun gaa-ay: "O holy people, sing the good qualities of the Lord." Gun means good qualities.

Then it counts our gifts: maan tan Dhan paraan parabh kay. Mind, body, wealth and breath all come from the One. Paraan means the breath of life.

Think of a birthday party. Look around the room. The cake, the friends, even the house, all came from someone's love. The verse says our whole life is like that. It is already a gift.

Then: simrat dukh jaa-ay, "remembering, pain goes away." When we remember the Giver, thankfulness grows, and the ache gets lighter.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you have that you sometimes forget to be grateful for?
