Words That Carry Us

ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਊਚੀ ਬਾਨੀ ॥
sant janaa kee oochee baanee.
The words of the humble Saints are lofty and exalted.
ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਤਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ॥੨॥੨॥੧੩॥
simar simar taray naanak paraanee. ||2||2||13||
Meditating, meditating in remembrance, O Nanak, mortal beings are carried across and saved. ||2||2||13||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The words of the humble saints are high and lofty.

Nanak says: Remembering, remembering, people are carried across.

The words of the wise are a bridge that carries ordinary people across.
The deeper layer

The words of the saints stand high, and remembering the One carries ordinary people across.

The verse says sant janaa kee oochee baanee: "the words of the humble Saints are lofty." Baanee means sacred words. Oochee means high. Their words stand tall, like a lighthouse that everyone can see.

Then: simar simar taray naanak paraanee, "remembering, remembering, O Nanak, people are carried across." Paraanee just means a living person, anyone with breath. That is the good news here. You do not have to be special. Everyday people are lifted. The door is open to all.

Think of a bridge over a river. The bridge does not ask who you are. It carries anyone who walks on it. Guru Arjan signs the shabad as Nanak.

A Question to Sit With

What words from someone wise still carry you when things are hard?
