A Sacred Gathering

ਮਹਾ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਸੰਤ ਆਸਨੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਗੋਬਿਦੁ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੨॥
mahaa pavitar sant aasan mil sang gobid Dhi-aa-ay. ||2||
The place of the Saints is utterly sacred; meet with them, and meditate on the Lord of the Universe. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The place where the saints sit is deeply holy. Meet with them, and meditate on the Lord of the Universe.

A place becomes sacred because of the good hearts gathered in it.
The deeper layer

A place becomes holy because of the holy people who gather there.

The verse says mahaa pavitar sant aasan: "the place of the Saints is utterly sacred." Mahaa means great. Pavitar means pure and holy. Aasan means a seat, a place to sit.

Then: mil sang gobid Dhi-aa-ay, "meet with them, and remember the Lord of the world."

Holiness here lives in people. Think of your kitchen table. On most days it is just a table. When the family sits together and shares stories, it becomes a special place. It is the people who make it so. In the same way, good hearts gathered together make any place sacred.

A Question to Sit With

What is a place that feels special mostly because of the people there?
