O Nanak, I have abandoned everything and come to Your Sanctuary. Please let me merge with You. ||3||3||14||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Nanak says: I have let go of everything and come to Your shelter. Please take me in and make me one with You.

Setting down the many things, the heart reaches for the one that matters.
The deeper layer

With everything else set down, you come to the One's shelter and ask to be made one with the One.

The verse says sagal ti-aag saran aa-i-o: "leaving everything, I have come to Your shelter." Ti-aag means letting go. Saran means shelter.

Then: naanak layho milaa-ay, "O Nanak, please unite me with You." Milaa-ay means to join together.

Think of a child coming home after a long day with a heavy backpack. At the door, they drop the bag and run into a hug. The many things are set down, so the arms are free for the one that matters. Guru Arjan signs the shabad as Nanak.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing you could set down to feel more free?
