Lifted From The Waters

ਬੂਡਤ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਾਗਰ ॥
boodat sansaar saagar.
I am drowning in the world-ocean.
ਉਧਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਰਤਨਾਗਰ ॥੧॥
uDhray har simar ratnaagar. ||1||
Meditating in remembrance on the Lord, the Source of Jewels, I am saved. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I am sinking in the wide ocean of the world.

I remember the One, the source of every jewel, and I am lifted out and saved.

Even when you feel like you are going under, help arrives when the heart turns.
The deeper layer

When the world feels like too much, remembering the One lifts you out.

Boodat sansaar saagar: "I am sinking in the world-ocean." Sansaar means this busy world. Sometimes it feels like big waves, one after another: homework, worries, noise.

Then: uDhray har simar ratnaagar, "remembering the Lord, the jewel-mine, I am lifted out." Ratnaagar means a mine full of jewels. It is a name for the One, the source of every good thing.

Think of a swimmer who is tired and scared. Then a lifeguard reaches out a hand. The waves have not stopped. But now someone is holding you.

A Question to Sit With

What lifts you back up when a day feels overwhelming?
