A Name That Soothes

ਸੀਤਲਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ॥
seetlaa har naam tayraa.
Your Name, Lord, is cooling and soothing.
ਪੂਰਨੋ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥੨॥
poorno thaakur parabh mayraa. ||2||
God, my Lord and Master, is Perfect. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Your Naam, O One, is cool and soothing.

My Lord and Master is perfect, lacking nothing.

The Naam is cool and soothing, and what we lean on lacks nothing.
The deeper layer

The Naam cools a hot, worried mind, and the One you lean on is complete.

Seetlaa har naam tayraa: "Your Naam is cooling." Seetlaa means cool. Worry can feel hot, like a fever or a summer afternoon with no shade. The Naam is like a cool cloth on your forehead.

Then: poorno thaakur parabh mayraa, "my Lord and Master is perfect." Poorno means full, lacking nothing.

That matters. When we lean on a chair, we want it to be strong. The One we lean on has no missing legs. Nothing is lacking. So we can rest our full weight there.

A Question to Sit With

What words or thoughts feel soothing when you repeat them to yourself?
