Nanak is at peace; the Guru has implanted the Naam, the Name of the Lord, within me. ||4||6||17||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have suffered pain through millions of lifetimes.

Nanak says: now I am at peace. The Guru has planted the Naam firmly inside me.

Long-carried sorrow finds its rest in a Naam planted deep and steady.
The deeper layer

Long, heavy sorrow can end in deep peace when the Guru plants the Naam inside you.

Kot janam dookh kar paa-i-o: "I have suffered pain through millions of lifetimes." Kot means millions. Dookh means pain. It is a picture of an ache carried a very long time.

Then: sukhee naanak gur naam darirh-aa-i-o, "Nanak is at peace; the Guru has planted the Naam firmly." The word darirh means firm and steady.

Think of a young tree planted in a windy yard. At first the wind pushes it around. But once its roots go deep, it stands firm through any storm. That is what the Guru does with the Naam: long sorrow is answered by rooted peace.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel at peace at the end of a long, hard stretch?
