Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
I am grimy inside, hard-hearted, sneaky, and full of wanting.
Carry me across, my Master, in whatever way You see fit.
Naming honestly what is tangled inside is the beginning of being carried across.
You can name honestly what is hard and tangled inside you, and ask the One to carry you across.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad. Kuchil kathor kapat kaamee: unclean, hard-hearted, deceitful, full of desire. These are strong words, and honest ones. Ji-o jaaneh ti-o taar su-aamee: carry me across as You know best, my Master. Honest naming opens the door to help, the way telling the doctor where it hurts is the start of getting better.
A Question to Sit With
What is one thing you would ask for gentle help to carry?
