Chanting and long meditation, hard practices and strict rules, fasting and washing clean: freedom does not come by any of these.
Nanak says: O One, please lift me up and out of this deep, dark pit. Look on me with Your kind glance.
Freedom comes through the One's kind glance, which lifts you out of the dark.
Jaap taap naym such sanjam naahee in biDhay chhutkaar: chanting, austerities, vows, ritual washing and self-control; freedom does not come by these means. Garat ghor anDh tay kaadhahu: lift me out of the deep, dark pit. Nadar nihaar: look on me with the glance of grace. Outward practice, by itself, cannot free a heart, in any tradition. Grace lifts.
