In plain words

My Friend, my dearest Friend, my Lord and Master, is near.

He sees and hears everything; He is with everyone. You are here for such a short time. Why spend it doing wrong?

The One who loves us is always near — so why turn toward what only harms?
The deeper layer

Your dearest Friend is close by, seeing and hearing everything, so a short life is best spent on what is good.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Saajan meet su-aamee nayro: my friend, my dearest friend, my master is near. Paykhat sunat sabhan kai sangay: seeing, hearing, with everyone. Thorai kaaj buro kah fayro: you are here for only a little while, so why turn to wrong?

Think of playing in the yard while someone who loves you watches from the window. Knowing they are there makes kindness feel natural.

A Question to Sit With

If you remembered a caring presence was always near, what might you choose differently?
