Nothing Here Is Yours

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੇਤੋ ਲਪਟਾਇਓ ਕਛੂ ਨਹੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਛੁ ਤੇਰੋ ॥
naam binaa jayto laptaa-i-o kachhoo nahee naahee kachh tayro.
Except for the Naam, whatever you are involved with is nothing - nothing is yours.
ਆਗੈ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਆਵਤ ਸਭ ਪਰਗਟ ਈਹਾ ਮੋਹਿਓ ਭਰਮ ਅੰਧੇਰੋ ॥੧॥
aagai darisat aavat sabh pargat eehaa mohi-o bharam anDhayro. ||1||
Hereafter, everything is revealed to your gaze; but in this world, all are enticed by the darkness of doubt. ||1||

In plain words

Apart from the Naam, everything you wrap yourself around is nothing at all. None of it is yours.

Later on, everything is shown plainly before your eyes. But here, people are charmed by the darkness of doubt.

The things worth holding are the ones that stay with you, not the ones you clutch.
The deeper layer

Apart from the Naam, nothing you hold on to stays yours, and here the darkness of doubt keeps that hidden.

Naam binaa jayto laptaa-i-o: everything you cling to apart from the Naam. Kachhoo nahee naahee kachh tayro: it is nothing, and none of it is yours. Aagai darisat aavat sabh pargat: ahead, everything comes plainly into view. Eehaa mohi-o bharam anDhayro: here, people are charmed by the darkness of doubt.

Think of a dream in which you own a huge castle. It feels like yours until you wake up. The Naam is what stays when you wake.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that matters to you that no one could ever take away?
