In plain words

People get stuck in Maya, the pull of the world, holding tight to their children and their husbands and wives. They forget the great and generous Giver.

Nanak says: I have one trust. My Guru is the One who sets me free from every bond.

We can love our people and still remember the Giver behind every gift.
The deeper layer

When family and things fill the whole heart, the Giver is forgotten; trust in the Guru sets the heart free.

Atki-o sut banitaa sang maa-i-aa: caught in Maya, held by children and spouse. Dayvanhaar daataar bisayro: the great Giver forgotten. Kaho naanak aykai bhaarosa-o: Guru Arjan, signing as Nanak, has one trust: bandhan kaatanhaar gur mayro, my Guru cuts every bond.

Loving your people is good. The invitation is to remember who gave them to you, the way you remember to thank the friend who gave you a gift.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what are you grateful to for the good things in your life?
