A Fragrance That Spreads

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਮਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਊਤਮ ਜਨਕ ਜਨਾਕ ॥
har kay sant janaa meh har har tay jan ootam janak janaak.
The Lord, Har, Har, is within the humble Saints of the Lord; they are exalted - they know, and they inspire others to know as well.
ਤਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਬਾਸੁ ਬਸਾਨੀ ਛੂਟਿ ਗਈ ਮੁਸਕੀ ਮੁਸਕਾਕ ॥੩॥
tin har hirdai baas basaanee chhoot ga-ee muskee muskaak. ||3||
The fragrance of the Lord permeates their hearts; they have abandoned the foul stench. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One, Har, Har, lives within the humble saints. They are great: they know, and they help others know too.

The sweet fragrance of the One fills their hearts, and the bad smell has gone away.

When goodness fills a heart, the stale old air clears out.
The deeper layer

The One lives in humble saints, filling them with a sweet fragrance that clears out the bad.

Tay jan ootam janak janaak means "those people are great; they know, and they help others know." What they have found, they pass on.

Tin har hirdai baas basaanee means "the fragrance of the One has settled in their hearts." Chhoot ga-ee muskee muskaak means "the foul smell has left." Open a window and let fresh air in, and the stale air goes out on its own.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing, once it fills you, leaves no room for the sour feelings?
