Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O One, You make Your humble servants Your own. You protect Your own.

Nanak says: the One is my friend. The One is my brother, my mother, my father, my relative and my family.

The One can be friend and family all at once — the nearest of all relations.
The deeper layer

The One takes you as Its own and is every kind of family to you.

Tumray jan tum(H) hee prabh kee-ay means "You, O One, made Your servants Your own." Har raakh layho aapan apnaak means "You protect Your own."

Sakhaa is friend, bhaa-ee is brother, maat pitaa is mother and father, banDhap and saak are relatives. Guru Ram Das signs his verses as Nanak. The whole circle of belonging is found in the One, the nearest relation of all.

A Question to Sit With

Who feels like family to you, even if they are not related by blood?
