Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One gives you your soul, your breath of life, and your honor.

Forget the One, and everything is lost.

When we forget the Giver, we lose touch with the gift.
The deeper layer

The One gives us everything, and when we forget the One, everything is lost.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Jee-a paraan maan daataa: the One is the Giver of soul, of breath, and of honor. Har bisratay hee haan: forget the One, and there is loss. This is not a threat. It is a gentle noticing.

Think of the air you breathe. You almost never think about it, yet every moment depends on it. When we forget the Source of every gift, we slowly lose touch with what those gifts are for.

A Question to Sit With

What is a gift in your life so constant that it is easy to forget?
