Trading Nectar For Dust

ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਆਨ ਲਾਗਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੋ ਡਾਰਿ ਭੂਮਿ ਪਾਗਹਿ ॥
gobind ti-aag aan laageh amrito daar bhoom paageh.
You have forsaken the Lord of the Universe, and become attached to another - you are throwing away the Ambrosial Nectar, to take dust.

What do you expect from corrupt pleasures? You fool! What makes you think that they will bring peace? ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You let go of the Lord of the World and hold on to something else. You pour away sweet nectar to pick up dust.

You are hooked on pleasures that spoil, foolish one. What makes you think they will bring you peace?

Peace comes from what lasts, not from what slips through our fingers.
The deeper layer

Turning away from the One for lesser things is like pouring out something sweet to grab a handful of dust.

Gobind ti-aag aan laageh: letting go of the One and holding on to something else. Amrito daar bhoom paageh: pouring out amrit, sweet nectar, to grab dust. Picture trading a warm, home-cooked meal for an empty candy wrapper.

Bikhai ras si-o aaskat moorhay: stuck on pleasures that fade, O foolish one. The word sounds strong, but it reads like a heart speaking honestly to itself, not a scolding. Those pleasures feel good for a moment. They were never built to give lasting peace.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that feels good briefly but never quite satisfies?
