Dry Bread With You Is Sweet Enough

Pearls, jewels and countless pleasures, O Nanak, are useless and destructive without the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

Even with only dry crusts of bread, and a hard floor on which to sleep, my life passes in peace and pleasure with my Beloved, O sisters. ||2||3||42||

In plain words

Nanak says: pearls, rubies and countless pleasures are useless without the Naam; they only bring harm.

Even with dry crusts of bread to eat and a hard floor to sleep on, O sisters, my life passes in peace and joy with my Beloved.

With love present, even the plainest life feels rich.
The deeper layer

With the One close by, even the plainest life feels rich.

Mukat laal anik bhog bin naam: pearls, rubies, and all kinds of pleasures are empty without the Naam. Rookho bhojan bhoom sain: dry bread to eat and the bare ground for a bed. Pari-a sang sookh bihaat: with the Beloved, life passes in peace.

Think of a camping trip with people you love. The food is simple and the ground is hard. Yet it can feel better than any fancy hotel.

A Question to Sit With

When has simple time with someone felt better than anything fancy?
