Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.
Give me that gift, dear saints, the gift my soul would give itself for.
Caught by pride, robbed and tangled up by the five thieves, I was living right next to them. I have come to the shelter of the holy ones, and they have freed me from the company of those troublemakers.
Ask the saints for the one gift that matters; in the shelter of holy people, the five thieves lose their hold.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad.
Aiso daan dayh jee santahu: dear saints, give me such a gift. Jaat jee-o balihaar: my soul is an offering for it. Maan mohee panch dohee: caught by pride, robbed by the five thieves, strong wanting, anger, greed, clinging and pride. Urajh nikat basi-o: tangled up, I was living right next to them.
Saran saaDhoo-aa doot sang nivaar: the shelter of the holy sets me free from their company. Picture living next door to noisy neighbors who keep pulling you into trouble, and then moving into a calm house full of friends.
How do good friends help you leave behind things that aren't good for you?
